Running Can Feel Easier and You Can Last Longer Using This Essential Oil ~

Sometimes athletic performance can be improved by something really simple. Like being exposed to peppermint oil before a run.

Yes, peppermint oil.

Athletes were shown to get stronger and run faster after exposure to just a tiny amount of peppermint oil. Peppermint oil has been shown to reduce perceived effort, while improving mood and brainpower.

It was found that taking as little as .05 ml (less than 1 drop) of essential peppermint oil in 500 ml of water (2 cups) can improve exercise performance and respiratory function, according to a study in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

The study tested participants before and after their 10-day peppermint/water consumption for various indicators of cardiovascular performance and the results were surprising.

The extent that peppermint consumption improved performance was considerable. The oil improved exercise performance, respiratory function, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory gas exchange. It also reduced resting blood pressure and heart rate. The amount of total work performed by the test subjects was increased by a whopping 51% with the peppermintn water, including an increase in the time to exhaustion of about 25%. So not only did the subjects go for a quarter longer than they did without the peppermint oil, their work rate per unit time was higher too. In other words, they went faster for longer.

Here are other benefits runners might expect when using peppermint oil:

— Relieve indigestion, gas, or nausea (are you a nervous racer?)
— Relieve a headache
— Increase mental alertness and concentration
— Smell of peppermint has been shown to reduce perceived effort
— Relieve aches and pains such as those brought on by arthritis, carpal tunnel or running

We gathered some ideas on ways runners can use peppermint oil:

  • Rub a drop or two on your chest before you begin, or rub between fingers and touch the tip of your nose
  • Put a drop on your tongue before a run and press it to the roof of your mouth so it can be delivered straight to your senses
  • Sprinkle a few drops in your shoes before a run to invigorate your feet.
  • Add a few drops to a wet cloth and place on your neck after a run to cool down.
  • Massage your legs and feet with a muscle rub made of 10 drops of peppermint essential oil and 1 ounce of sweet almond oil.
  • Put a dab of the oil on the inside of each wrist for nausea, and on each temple for a headache.

If you want to take the peppermint oil/water internally, be sure you buy the type meant for internal consumption and not strictly for external/body use.  Peppermint oil doesn’t sit well with everyone when taken internally, so be cautious if going this route. You may want to begin simply by getting a sniff or two before a run.
